1984

Organised by Screen Cultures associate Mark McKenna (Sunderland) with Alessandra Mondin, the conference considers the consequences of the 1984 Video Recordings Act and its enduring impact on attitudes to censorship in the UK. Oliver Carter and John Mercer are also presenting papers and chairing panels.

Over two days the conference has guest speakers including the production team of Channel Four’s After Dark talk show, David Cooke the Director of the BBFC and keynote addresses from Prof Martin Barker, Prof Julian Petley and Professor Clarissa Smith. It’s a very important event for everyone interested in questions of censorship and freedom of expression.
